Tropfest 2004

A particularly good year for shorts this year. The weather was great as you can see above and the vibe was perfectly relaxed. I sat down with my mates (that’s Andy in the foreground), drank fine beverages and just soaked up the atmosphere. My favourite short was Book Em but it didn’t win any of the major awards. Yin was also very good and it was good to see a Flash animation making the finals. The winner of the grand prize was The Money which I found reasonably predictable but quite funny.

Tropfest in general, is a good initiative for short filmmakers in Australia but I get the impression it’s a little overrated. There are a lot of other festivals that produce just as good if not better films and the selection process sometimes feels somewhat biased. One of the films was extremely well shot but had a contrived story and I think they chose it solely on the cinematography alone. In all honesty, it looked like a car advertisement and not really something I would expect to reach the finals.

Overall however, the talent was strong this year and it was good to see Flash animations taken seriously in a major festival.
