Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Warner Bros released the theatrical trailer to the new Harry Potter film today. First impressions?
Looks fucking awesome!
I think having Alfonso Cuar’f3n taking control of the picture will give the Harry Potter films that darker edge that the Lord of the Rings trilogy manage to capture so beautifully. It\rquote ll still be fine family entertainment but something tells me this is going to be something the rest of us can enjoy, besides those under the age of 13. I\rquote m still getting my head around the fact that this is going to be from the man that brought you Y tu mam’e1 tambi’e9n. That\rquote s a head fuck right there.
What were my impressions of the first two Harry Potter films? I wasn\rquote t a big fan. They just seemed too conventional and contrived. Then again, I wasn\rquote t their target audience. I asked my cousin if she likes them and of course, being 11 years old, she loves them to death. I found the books much more rewarding. They are simply fantastic escapist reading. They totally took me away to Hogwarts while reading them late at night in bed or travelling on the trains. I think part of the reason I didn\rquote t find the films all that appealing was also due to the fact that the Lord of the Rings were released around the same time and they just took adventure/fantasy films to a whole new level. Comparison was inevitable. I remember seeing Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and being reasonably impressed with the CGI Dobby. Of course not long after, Gollum reared his ugly face in the LOTR: The Two Towers and had me awestruck for weeks on end. And that was only the CGI. Don\rquote t get me started on the direction, cinematography, performances, etc’85
Still the Prisoner of Azkaban has all the right ingredients to make a bigger, better, and more substantial fantasy film that will hopefully deliver for the young and the old (and the somewhere in between).

I’m completely besotted with everything to do with Harry Potter. I, like James, fell in love with escaping to Hogwarts with Harry every book (which she takes her sweet time writing, I might add) and for me, because the films have been such amazing recreations of the images created in my head by the novels I’m in love with them too.
I never even bothered to draw comparison between Harry Potter & The Lord of The Rings though.
Azkaban will be awesome. I think the change in director is for the better seeing as how as Harry grows up, the issues he’s going to face become more perilous. And the new Dumbledore will be fucking awesome.
Just saw the mouseover on the image. Move the franchise in the right direction? You would think the millions it’s made already would mean it’s already there, wouldn’t you? Or do you mean will it move it to a more adult direction?
Box-office merit doesn’t imply artistic integrity is all I’m saying.
I think this will definately take the franchise to new heights. For one, it’s arguably the best book in the series thus far, and secondly, the stakes go up in this one. Harry is well and truly entering adulthood.
Can’t wait.
I liked Order of the Pheonix better, myself. That, imo, is thus far the most “adult” read of the lot. The fantastic thing is that in the midst of all of this witchcraft and wizardry, there’s still the story of a boy growing up, and only being 21 it’s still something I can still well relate too.
Listening to the smith’s too much and pining unrequited high school love builds a strange bridge with the books, too. LOL.
Peace out.
