Cheers Darlin’

Been a hectic past week. Russell has gone off on another violent outburst and chomped on his mate’s ear (you’re a good actor dude but you seriously need help), Australian Olympians get caught up in all sorts of controversies (eh), some stranger in Footscray sits next to me on the train and whispers “bloody terrorists” while pointing to an Indian wearing a turban (nice to see racism is still as rampant as ever) and James’s hard drive died in its arse. Of course the latter is the most important issue here and after two days of hardcore maintenance, most things are pretty much back on track except that I lost my editing timeline and with it all my edits! That pissed me off like you wouldn’t believe. As a bonus, you’ll notice I’ve added a little ‘hooverdust’ (fav)icon next to the web address so that you now have an amazingly brilliant visual representation of my site when you’re browsing through those favourite bookmarks. Thought you’d be impressed!
Reviewed Before Sunset a few days back and I’m still sticking by my comments that it’s the best film of 2004 so far. But it’s not for everyone. Two big sequels have just opened up in the US, Alien Vs Predator and Exorcist: The Beginning with terrible reviews, both of which I predicted would turn out to be excruciatingly painful to watch. So it’s awesome that Richard Linklater can show the world how to make an excellent sequel.
I’m keen to see The Girl Next Door opening tomorrow since I’m a sucker for both potentially crappy crude male-oriented teen films and Eliza Cuthbert. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t seeing if for the eye candy factor but it also looks like a lotta fun based on the trailer. Could be the perfect Friday night movie before heading out later on?
Scored tickets to see Irish musician Damien Rice (pictured above with Lisa Hannigan) and band perform at the Prince on October 21st. O is a great album and some of his b-sides are very good. He’ll be bringing Lisa Hannigan and the band with him in his first Australian gig so I imagine this show will sell-out. Anybody out there seen Damien and the band live? I’d like to hear any thoughts you have to share.
And while we’re on the subject of music, this little sucker might be in my possession soon (made by Roland actually) with this providing all the sounds and editing solutions to make my tunes come to life. It’s a good start anyway. I’ve been wanting to get into film and project scoring for a while now so I think this combination is a good start. Plus having a miniDisc enables me to record my own sounds and manipulate the hell outta them. I also think that if you can compose your own soundtracks and get a better understanding of how the scoring process works, you can at least create temp tracks so the ‘real’ musicians can get an idea of what you’d really like in the end. I have no illusions of being a ‘real’ musician but just being a good amateur is better than being nothing at all. Plus it’s so cool having a virtual orchestra at your fingertips. Trust me on that :)

James - Looks like you’ve been doing some of the homework I’ve been too lazy to do. I’ve been asking around (Neil et al.) what to use (as a good amateur) to play around with composing and “having a virtual orchestra at my fingertips”. So thanks for the tips.
I love the story about Damien Rice *he cuts, he pastes* “He headed for the hills of Tuscany in 1999 and lived his life as a wanderer around Europe. Rice returned to Dublin within a year to focus on music once again, scrounging up enough money to record a demo. Rice sent it to producer/film composer David Arnold (Bjork, Nina Persson, Paul Oakenfold), and lucky for him, Arnold loved it. Arnold set Rice up in his very own mobile studio to make a record.” By the way James, in relation to the MIDI stuff, do you just buy the first thing you find, like your sis, or do you research the market!!! Oh - and I don’t think Lisa Hannigan adds anything of note to Damien Rice’s ‘O’ album. But I do love the album.
I research dude. I test them out in the stores before hand. This keyboard isn’t too bad and having the Roland name attached means it’s quality.
Yeah Rice’s story is pretty interesting. Busking around Europe to get away from the pressures of the music business is probably a good way to get your head straightened out.
And I disagree that Lisa doesn’t add anything of note to O. ‘Cold Water’ just wouldn’t have the same feel without her haunting vocals.
Just watched TV highlights of Glastonbury Festival. Damien Rice played Cannonball. I enjoyed it but it seemed very unpolished, like some pub singer covering the song. I think I like that, especially for such a simple, heartfelt song.
Damien Rice is a god. I’ve watched live recordings but never had the pleasure. from what i see it’s atmospherically amazing and perfectly aranged. i downloaded lonely soldier. a song he did with christy moore a few mins ago, godly. found you on google :). so all’s good.
