Hitting Hard

[ Yup it's been pissing down ]

Melbourne’s weather isn’t quite as fierce as the recent hail storms that have hit Sydney recently but it’s been damn unpredictable lately. We’ve had 20 degree days and then the above happens and it turns cold and nasty. This is expected to continue for the next few days too! There goes my weekend!

Okay yes, the updates of Hooverdust have been less frequent over the past couple of weeks but I just haven’t come across anything that I’ve felt compelled to go into detail about, especially film. I have uploaded a new Short Reviews post which will let you know what I’ve been watching recently but other than that, I’ve been extremely busy with Uni commitments, work and various social events.

I’ve just finished critiquing 21 documentary scripts and films for Uni which was actually really fascinating but exhausting. Remember that documentary I stated a little while back that I was writing about online music? Well that idea caused more headaches than you could possibly imagine including get those all important interviews I needed. So I’ve put that idea aside for now and have focused on something that isn’t political. Sure they’re all the rage at the moment but I’ve adopted for a project that has just as much potential to inform yet is probably a thousand times easier to construct. It concerns three unique shift workers and the repercussions the job has on them both physically and mentally. Being intimately familiar with this practice, I’d also like to explore how it’s affected those close to them including their partners, family and friends. I have a good sense of visuals, sound, and story progression so it’s just the matter of getting my script selected. So far the response has been really positive so if all goes well, I should start shooting in a couple weeks.

[ 'Baby got back! James got his editing groove back!' ]

I’ve also been heavily editing more content for my eventual DVD which I’ve had to re-edit from memory since I lost the original timeline. I guess when you spend hours editing something over and over you get a pretty good picture in your head of how things flow. But I’ve still got a little way off before it’s completed. Oh and I haven’t had the chance to sit down properly with the new keyboard yet but it will prove useful in the coming weeks with the documentary and a couple of client projects on the go.

I’m also on the lookout for some work experience in the coming weeks which will hopefully lead into something permanent. Finding a graduate job in the multimedia/web/dvd/filmmaking field is not fucking easy but I’m going in there pretty optimistic and enthusiastic. Anybody know of any positions available? Don’t hestitate to e-mail me. If I come out smiling, I\rquote ll be extremely fortunate. If not, I’ll still be a better man for giving it my all. Well at least in my own eyes ;D

Did I give you that idea about following the buskers of Melbourne around and finding out about their lives and their influences?

I like the sound of your film - true that those who work strange / shift hours live in a different world to the rest of us, and I imagine it’s pretty isolating. (see also: R.E.M’s song Daysleeper)
