Little Birdy/Evermore

[ Little Birdy at the top and middle. Evermore at the bottom ]

It’s been a while since I’ve seen some live bands and actually taken a camera with me. I did see Silver Ray a few weeks back at Bar Open which was brilliant but I totally forgot to take the camera since it was a last minute decision.

Friday night I caught probably two of the more prolific Australian bands at the moment, Little Birdy and Evermore play The Corner Hotel. It was a perfect wind down after last week’s ball of shit. Evermore were supporting Little Birdy but it became evidently clear afterwards that they were more interesting musically. The three piece brother band did an extremely tight set for such young musicians (16, 18 and 20) promoting their debut album ‘Dreams’. Some of it got a little ’samey’ but they finished with a good nine minute version of the one of the tracks off their album that served them well, with some big reactions from the late teen/early twentish crowd (probably mostly Triple J Net 50 listeners). And because these guys are so young, they’ll have plenty of time to expand their range and move into greatness.

Once Little Birdy arrived, the crowd numbers grew considerably since this was a sell-out gig. In typical Corner fashion, empty pot (plastic) glasses were flying about, narrowing missing my head on a few occasions. But I didn’t really care once 19-year old lead singer Katy Steele had jumped out on stage in full rock chick mode, ready to entertain the audience. She sung her little lungs out, played with her hair, and moved about the stage like she owned the place. There’s something about the sexy rock chick look that always gets me and she has it in spades. Not to mention an incredibly cute and sexy voice that sounds just as good (if not better!) live as it does on the album. Unfortunately, the music tended to get ’samey’ as well but they did finish with a great encore, praising the Melbourne crowd who obviously loved every minute of it. Both these bands have just released their debut albums so they’re still reasonably ‘green’ musicians (although listening to them you couldn’t tell) but they have to be two of the better alternate Aussie artists I’ve heard in quite some time.

Oh and I’m a lot less stressed now, thanks for asking :) Even though the election results still leave me somewhat disappointed :(

Extra Feature:

Just like da DVDs have! Download a 30 second video clip of Little Birdy that I took right here (REMOVED!). Something tells me you’ve heard that song before ;)
