Caulfield Cup 2004

Ahhhhh the Caulfield Cup. A 50,000-odd crowd, a lot of fake tan and alcohol aplenty makes for a fun day out. Oh did I mention it’s actually a horse-racing carnival? I guess it’s not really important since the majority of punters were there just to dress up, socialise and drink. I placed a couple of bets only to lose so that started and ended my dealings with Cup betting. The organisers would have made an absolute fortune too since it cost $40 just to get into the carnival and then $4.60 for a can of Carlton Draught! With that factor in tow, I paced myself quite nicely and didn’t up embarrassing myself like so many others (although I’m sure I did later on that night at Duncans party but more on that further down). The main race itself was no big surprise with the favourite Elvstrome (which I pronounced Elvistrome for some reason) winning the race at 3.60 to 1. I can’t see myself going to another Cup unless it’s at the mercy of a girlfriend since the racing itself is incredibly boring. It’s 2 mins of joy in a seven hour day. Celebrity sightings included My Restaurant Rules Melbourne couple Peter and Tayissa (who were swamped by 18-year old fans and sat right next to our gathering), the legendary Bart Cummings and ‘the-beautiful-sexy-and-memorable-woman-James-met-at-a-party-
who-instantly-clicked-with-but-has-a-boyfriend’.
At around 6pm, I made my way back home (which took forever and a day since the cabbies were hard to get) and got ready for Duncan’s birthday celebrations at 9pm (Happy Birthday D!). Not the numbers he was expecting, the party was kinda flat so Mr Beam and various other liquids made up for that. Duncan had a video speech prepared for you all but the camera cut him off half-way through his epic ode on the Hooverdust readers. There were a number of film-geek discussions going on around the party since a few of the guests were into film and pop-culture (what a surprise). One dude there was only 21 yet already directing a TV series (can’t recall which one) and working on film scripts and the like. I thought that was pretty damn impressive for someone so young. Dude, if you’re reading, “be sure to get that groundbreaking Australian film into production!”. I kept my film discussion to a minimum but the camera did come out at around midnight when things got notably hazy. I have to apologise to all those people who had some stranger put a camera in your face. But I was bored and entirely too drunk to remember or care. I blame the past 2 weeks of stress and me. Feel free to flame my e-mail account.
Caught Collateral on Friday night, with a full review coming shortly. A better film than it should have been and probably the best action film of 2004. Should be checking out the much-praised thriller Open Water this week and hopefully Anchorman as well. I think that covers enough genres for the week. Peace out!

Hey that was an excellent update. Let’s hear more about the girl you clicked with but has a BF…or maybe not? I agree that racing is dull. I suppose I should attend the Melbourne Cup sooner or later. I’ve never been since I moved down from Brisbane seven years ago. The party sounds OK too - it is a fact that hitting the turps does improve certain ’situations’. If you can pace yourself it usually works out the best all round. (For me that is a big ‘if’, ha-ha.)
I’ll be seeing Collateral given that it’s been praised highly. I was dubious of Tom Cruise in silly looking make-up, but perhaps this role suits the self-conscious star persona performances he cannot avoid giving these days. Mann is a great director too and worth supporting with a theatrical box office donation. Ditto Open Water.
Not a great deal to say on this site about ‘the girl that got away’ except for the fact that (a) it’s very rare to meet someone who totally gets you and vise versa so when you do it hits the heart pretty hard and (b) she has a boyfriend who I’m pretty sure she lives with and I’m not one of those guys who would break up a happy couple. It would have to be her doing and that never eventuated (which is understandable I guess). But something tells me I’ll see her again sometime.
In terms of the party, there was no pacing there. No pacing at all.
I got three things to say:
1. Collateral rocks. Completely worthy of your hard earned cash.
2. The importance of pacing cannot be understated.
3. People who run website always get the guy/girl. It’s a rule.
Lyn: you’ve yet to say something I disagree with. Sage words once again! (Although I’ve not seen Collesterol yet… :D )
I shall look forward to your review in Anchorman even though I saw it quite a few months ago in the US. It is quite a funny movie indeed.
