Micah P. Hinson

[ Micah P. Hinson ]

We haven’t heard much about this artist in Australia yet but for a 22-year old, he has much to tell. You can read more about him here. I just got my hands on his debut record ‘Micah P. Hinson and The Gospel of Progress’ after a friend read my last post and recommended it. It’s one of those records that seems like it came from someone twice his age. The first thing I noticed is that he didn’t sound 22. Listen to demos in the MP3/Video section for proof. But it’s not just his vocals.

But it’s not just his vocals. His songs are very personal as well and they’ll click with a lot of people. Another of those ‘wise beyond their years’ types. Musically, he’s not overly produced which really suites his down-to-earth smoky vocals. He collaborated with The Earlies but their electronic influence hasn’t overshadowed his guitar-based songs. They only step in to support it and thank fuck. The final track on the album and his debut single Day Texas Sank to the Bottom of the Sea is the standout and keeps on building and building. Lyrically it brought flashbacks of David Gray’s This Years Love in its hope for something better to come along.

Seriously though, through all my clich’ed praises, he’s one to look out for. If you manage to catch him live, count yourself lucky since he’s relatively unknown at the moment and chances are you’ll catch a cheap and brilliant gig (like at the recent South by Southwest festival).

You sure it’s a he and not a she? The photo is ambiguous at best, but we’ll take your word for it. I’ll check out the samples when I get home. Keep the music spotlight trained on these ‘new’ artists, James. They must be grateful to ya!

Trust me, when you hear this artist sing, you’ll believe he’s a ‘he’.

And it would be inspiring if one of these ‘new’ artists contacted me but hooverdust.com isn’t quite in the ranks of say NME, Uncut or Allmusic.com. Well not yet, anyway ;)

He looks like an uglier Missy Higgins with even smaller titties. He’d want to hope his voice is good!! I’m not going to bother checking it out, though. HA!

I always dig artists who never ‘look the part’ but prove their worth through the power of their songwriting and musical ability.

Look at Thom Yorke. He’s a strange looking fella yet he’s one of the best and most respected musicians in the business.

Yeah, he has a lazy eye, sure, but it’s his mania, introspection, impression of isolation, desperation and brilliantly diverse vocal range that captivates (as well as the fact that the band are fucking brilliant. In fact I heard a brand spankin new live track last night, direct from the mule which was an inspiring look at what’s coming). But that guy looks like a queef with an accoustic, doing what hundreds of thousands of people have already done, and have done a lot better. You see, you can make decisions on ignorance. I’m still not going to listen.
