‘Vlogs’ - The Future of Online Promotion

Okay so no doubt you’ve already checked out the kingiskong.net website at least once in your Internet travels because I’ve raved about it before and I’ve always enjoyed the King Kong video production diaries Jacko and co. present on a semi-weekly basis. They’re informative, insightful and recently, quite funny. So listen to me people, because I know best. *cough* *cough* *bullshit James!* *cough* *cough*
Well now director Bryan Singer (he of The Usual Suspects and X-Men movies fame) and his production team have developed their own site called bluetights.net. Although not as geeky (or as cool) as kingiskong.net, it still gives viewers, filmmakers, and enthusiasts a closer look at how the production team are handling the new entry of the Superman saga. Most interesting of all is the video diaries section (or more accurately entitled ‘Bryan’s Journals’) which essentially follow Bryan and his production team around as they work.
Expect this to be a growing fashion on the Internet and hopefully you’ll be seeing more and more filmmakers jump onto the video blog bandwagon (or ‘Vlog’ as it’s been called). When you think about it, it’s clever marketing because for these types of movies (i.e popcorn entertainment vehicles) there are already a vast legion of fans out there wanting more and it’s a great way to generate additional buzz and garner even more fans. But it would definitely be interesting to see video production diaries from more obscure directors such as David Lynch or Terry Gilliam because they have such different approaches to filmmaking and you’d no doubt get some idea of what is going on inside those bizarre and brilliant minds. And let’s not forget those productions that go into absolute chaos (think of Apocalypse Now or any number of James Cameron productions). The problem there would be when the studio heavyweights step in and prevent those chaotic situations from being made public. I mean, if the shit really hit the fan, do you think a movie studio would allow the public to see I dunno, Bryan Singer yelling expletives at the producers for not allowing a set to be completed? Or Jack Black doing lines of coke on the set of Kong? Not likely I’m sure. But hey, wouldn’t it be fun to watch?
Bands could use these ‘Vlogs’ too, to promote the recording of a new album for example. Whether it will be as interesting or dynamic as a film set will largely depend on the band and the recording process but fans will definitely lap it up.
I think the real problem with ‘Vlogs’ will eventuate when anyone and everyone start surfacing them and the entire concept becomes redundant. Hell, people are already abandoning their blogs due to lack of inspiration, originality or resources, so sure, ‘Vlogs’ may become popular but for how long?
And then there’s this:
- Watch Bryan Singer and Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption) direct a segment of King Kong while Jacko snoozes off.
- See the other side of the story over at bluetights.net.

And as I thought when I saw Peter Jackson onstage in Sydney recently, hasn’t he lost a lot of weight? - he looks like half the guy he used to be, but in a good way!
Apparently he swapped burgers for muesli and yogurt. That’s the secret to becoming ‘Derek’ again!
