X&Y delivers in spades!

[ COLDPLAY - It's all about the universe ]

It’s simple yet progressive. It’s ambitious yet restrained. It’s more U2 than Radiohead. It’s got a level of Brian Eno mixed in. It’s Coldplay’s X&Y. I think what the band have managed to achieve is reaching that grey area between being fantastic pop musicians and creating a credible Indie presence. The quality of songs from beginning to end on X&Y are arguably higher than those from their previous records. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the album is the lyrics which one might assume would include frontman Chris Martin’s relationship with Gwyneth or the birth of their daughter. Sure you could find the references here and there but not in an obvious way. It’s not all happy, sappy either.

For example on the track ‘Fix You’, Martin laments “When you love someone but it goes to waste, could it be worse?”. But things never go anywhere near bleakness. And when the majority of the lyrics mention the stars, space and the ocean while layering in atmospheric organs and sounds, you wouldn’t really expect that either. X&Y is a delight to the senses and is guaranteed to leave you on a high. Fans and newcomers will not be disappointed.

8/10

Is there a simple track on there that could be done well acoustic at my gig next Sunday.

Yup. The very last track Til Kingdom Come is an acoustic. Martin wrote it for Johnny Cash actually.
I think it’d go down very well at your gig! Good luck dude!

Just listening right now to ‘Fix You’, the last track of Coldplay’s live Radio 1 gig tonight. Pertinent. Nuff said.
