Zombiethon Finale

Well the final zombiethon session went down in spectacular fashion last night, hosted generously by Melbourne’s own gore king Rod Williams (Great setup mate!) with Beth and Clay in attendance. Rod made sure the finale featured plenty of blood and laughs with Peter Jackson’s Braindead and Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead. Hanging my head in shame for missing the previous outings, all was forgotten once the beer started flowing.

Braindead was first up on the bill and Rod being Rod, screened the Spanish uncut DVD edition featuring more gore(!) than one should be subjected to after eating sushi and tuna handrolls for dinner. But soon enough the comments came in thick and fast from all involved including Clay’s pointing out of the mysterious appearance of Queen Elizabeth II, Beth’s Spanish 101 not to mention her ‘wriggling and squirming’ and Rod’s constant disappointment with not being able to turn off the Spanish subtitles. Memorable stuff. The film itself is an instant classic from the zombie baby (the face in the frypan is my favourite bit), the priest who “kicks ass for the lord”, the eating of one’s ear and of course, the talent of Richard Taylor and Jacko who apparently made the bloodiest movie of all-time. Reminiscent of Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead (which was also screened in the zombiethon a few weeks back) in respect to camera work and the development of the zombies, Braindead was a hoot!

Shaun of the Dead closed the zombiethon and it couldn’t have been more fitting. I’ve seen the film probably five times now and I only realised this time that the entire cast of British comedy TV are in it including two from The Office, three from Black Books (Bill Bailey was a zombie in there), one from Little Britain (well spotted Beth!) and at least five from Spaced (including ‘Tyres’. Did you spot him?).

All-in-all, a great time was had by all so now it’s my turn to host the moviethon. Hmmmmmmm where to start…

Nice to have you down for the evening. Sorry about the DVD player stuttering during Shaun of the Dead. I watched Queen of the Damned last night and it worked perfectly. Why should it stuff up on the good film and not the bad one? There ain’t no justice!

Don’t sweat it Rod. I’m sure mine will fuck up as soon as my porn film festival begins.

I didn’t squirm that much. Given the gore. SO have you had ideas for your film festival yet? I still like the idea of Westerns and Aussie 70s flicks, but I’m sure you’ll have some great ideas…

Yeah I’m working on it. Something based around the 70’s is highly likely but in what genre and respect, I’ll keep you guessing :)
