Summer Films 2005

Thumbsucker
Got cult flick written all over it and comparisons to Donnie Darko have been thrown around since this is another youth alienation picture from a debut feature filmmaker. But I hear it’s got some great performances and the characters are well written. Big fan of Tilda Swinton too.

Me and You and Everyone We Know
Another debut feature this time from Miranda July (who also stars). This film won the Special Jury Prize for “Originality of Vision” at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, David and Margaret loved it, and it’s been lauded everywhere as ‘highly original’. Something we’re hearing less and less of particularly in American cinema.

Shopgirl
Steve Martin wrote the screenplay and the novel from which this film is based and chose to act as the lead. That’s a lot of work and obviously something he’s very passionate about. Claire Danes apparently gets the best role of her career and I’ve always thought she’s one of those ‘overlooked’ actresses. But could this be just another Lost in Translation rip-off? I hope not

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
I’ve previously stated I didn’t care for the first two Harry Potter movies but Alfonso Cuarón made me sit up and take notice in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Reviews have been extremely positive for the Goblet of Fire, even topping Alfonso’s efforts. That’s not something I expected so I’ll be off to catch this one next week.

Good Night and Good Luck
After the successful screening of Network at the Seldom Seen American Seventies Cinema festival, this is mandatory viewing. George Clooney looks like he’s well and truly shaken the ER stigma attached to his career and gone on to make something quite brilliant.

King Kong
Sure the first trailer didn’t excite me much but the second one and these TV spots make me want to see puppy on the big screen. It probably won’t reach the heights of The Lord of the Rings but it might be one hellva popcorn flick! (P.S - Don’t forget the 1933 original is being screened on ABC TV Tuesday 13th December at 11pm. Set those DVD players!)

Broken Flowers
Where the hell did this Bill Murray/Jim Jarmusch, highly raved about collaboration disappear to? It feels like it’s been out in the US for years! Oh yeah and it has Tilda Swinton AND Julie Delpy in it. Tell me that’s not perfect casting (Make a note Shane Black!)?

Yeah everyone I know raves about it. I gotta see these films so I can complete my Top 10s for this year! Music I’ve got covered but the films this year haven’t impressed me all that much.
