Australia Day

Yes it was bloody hot again (40 degrees), yes I ate BBQ food and yes I tuned into Triple J’s Hottest 100 for another year. The top 10 songs were as follows:
- Wish You Well - Bernard Fanning
- Catch My Disease - Ben Lee
- Feel Good Inc. - Gorillaz
- Best Of You - Foo Fighters
- Dare - Gorillaz
- Minds Eye - Wolfmother
- My Doorbell - The White Stripes
- O Yeah - End of Fashion
- Joker and the Thief - Wolfmother
- Do You Want To - Franz Ferdinand
A few surprises in there. I totally expected Wolfmother to make it into the Top 5, even nabbing the top spot but there’s just too many Powderfinger fans out there. I can understand how The Foo Fighters made it to number 4 even though I wouldn’t have placed them into the top 30. The Arctic Monkeys with ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’ only made it to 50? I suspect we haven’t got the Monkeys fever here just yet. My favourite band of 2005 ‘Bloc Party’ came in at number 23 with the new single ‘Two More Years’. Thought they might have ranked higher and with one of the tracks off the album. But overall a good selection of tunes and broadcasting from Sydney’s BDO made it feel it was one big party shared by hundreds of thousands of Australian who love music.
Later that night I watched the amazing mens semi final of the Australian Open, unseeded Marcos Baghdatis coming back from two sets down to beat 4th seed David Nalbandian. Now everyone knows that I’m not into sports except when it comes to big events such as the Australian Open. But tennis just happens to be one sport I never tire of. It’s fun to play, great to watch when you have two highly skilled competitive players and on a warm summers night, there’s no better way to relax than with a cold beer in one hand and seeing the underdog beat the odds. Now tell me that isn’t Australian?

Yeah I was expecting Wolfmother to get No. 1 too but I’m glad they didn’t - there is some way cooler music from last year. Maybe a little bit of the whole “go for the underdog” thing affected people’s votes? What do you reckon? The J Award, 6 songs in the hottest 100 AND No. 1, it would have been too much!
You’re so right. If they scored number 1 it would’ve been way too much. I like Wolfmother though but not enough to score 6 songs in the list. I like to think of them as the new ‘Jet’. Good fun, kinda rock-pop but go and listen to the bands that influenced them to see where the mastery (and originality) is.
