Short Reviews #8 


There’s been some serious DVD watchin’ during these past couple of weeks on holidays (back at work tomorrow :( ). Here’s some mini-reviews:

Crash (2004?)

Powerful yet slightly preachy ensemble piece about underlying racism within different ethnic groups in Los Angeles (and it ain’t much different here in Australia). Haggis as a director isn’t nearly as brilliant as he is a writer since sometimes the performances seem a tad forced and unnatural but the script is incredibly layered and intelligent. I loved the point Haggis makes with Sandra Bullocks character in that someone can live in complete fear due to their social conditioning yet they’re more likely to fall down a flight of stairs and get injured than get attacked by the people they fear. Could have used a slightly longer running time to delve a little deeper into the characters but it’s still a film everyone should see. Would’ve made it just outside my Top 5 for 2005 had I seen it last year.
