The Day The Music Died…

1.8 years old and my beloved 4G 40Gb ipod is going to the ipod grave. The service is on Saturday 12pm - 12:01pm for those who want to attend. Light refreshments and food will be provided.
This is the second ipod I’ve owned. The first was the same model but the hard drive failed. Luckily it was under warranty at the time. This time, the screen came up with the dreaded unhappy face everytime I reset it which is never a good sign. So I attempted to open it up and this isn’t as easy as you’d think. Since my warranty was void anyway, I thought “what the hell” though. Now I don’t recommend you use a swiss army knife to open it. I’ve seen a few guides on how to pry it open and they all recommend using hard plastic. Probably for good reason because as soon as metal touches the screen, it damages the LCD you can see above. But I blame all of this after coming home from a Saturday night and trying to fix it. Not a good idea.
Anyhoo, I’m now on the lookout for a replacement until the new video ipod makes its way onto the shelves. If anybody has a second-hand iPod (30Gb or higher) they want to sell, shoot me an email.

ACK! Terrible news there James. I dunno what I’d do without my Pod. As you know, I’ve had 2 6 month old Powerbooks fuck up on me in the past 8 months. I treat them with absolute kid-gloves - they are immaculate yet in the space of 8 months I’ve had a hard-drive die and on my other machine 2 screens & 3(!) logic boards replaced. It’s just not good enough on Apple’s part.
I’ve been lucky with my iPods though. My original one from 2003 is still going strong. I use it these days as a back-up drive otherwise I would consider selling it.
Yeah I feel totally naked with out it but I can’t afford a new one at this stage. I WAS using as a backup drive as well so it really does kill.
Surely someone has one out there collecting dust at the back of their cabinets.
That sounds right friggen shite about the Powerbooks and the screens man. I remember my old boss’s brand-new Mac Book DVD drive getting jammed with standard Apple software disks! But I’ve heard A LOT of complaints with these machines.
To be honest I’ve used both PC’s and Macs day-in and day-out and a well-built custom PC always seems to outperform and outlast the Macs.
Write to Apple and complain. This is not good enough for gear that costs hundreds of dollars. If you have the receipts for both units, you can prove you bought two of them…they will blanch at that, if Apple has a soul.
Well I didn’t buy two. I got the original one replaced free of charge. And because I tried to open the sucker anyway, that voids the warranty (even though it’s only a 1 year warranty and mine is 1.8 years old). Chances don’t look good.
But they should give me a new one because they’re supposed to last 8 years!!!
I feel your sadness
