Starky, Pony Up

Checked out Sydney rockers Starky on Friday night. These guys have had a huge amount of publicity in various media and be sure to check out Sydney photographer Paul Gosney’s work for their album. Brilliant indeed.

Supporting were Pony Up, the all-girl Canadian band who you’ve probably heard on the radio with their single ‘The Truth About Cats and Dogs (And then they die)’. Not the greatest performers but they had their own thing going on which was cool enough for me. And their video is pretty awesome.

Okkervil River gig

Having sold out their first gig this Friday, 7-piece Texan band Okkervil River played a second to another packed house last night at the East Brunswick Club. This was by far the best gig of the year for me, despite the band being severely jetlagged. The band were tight, energised and had the crowd in the palm of their hand. During the encore, lead singer Will Sheff went solo and delivered a beautiful acoustic rendition of a new song (I think!) which had allll the girls crying (James takes notes - “How to make a girl cry with song”). Highlights for me was my fav song on the record ‘For Real’ and ‘So Come Back, I Am Waiting’. Yet another band from Texas making a mark on the world.

The Close of the Season

HBO's Entourage & Deadwood
With The Sopranos approaching its 8 episode last season next year (March 2007) and Deadwood closing its barn doors with 2 two-hour episodes next year, it feels like an end of an era to some of the best television dramas ever made. Luckily you can pick up these great series on DVD at great prices at the moment. I just finished watching the season 3 finales of Deadwood and HBO’s growing hit Entourage and they were both great in their own right. Disappointed that Deadwood wouldn’t be picked up for another 12 episode season, creator David Milch was at least fortunate enough to create 4 more hours to bring closure of the show. The season 3 finale leaves quite a few things unresolved and when you watch it, you realise why initially Milch would’ve been mightily pissed off.

Entourage on the other hand ends on perhaps a more positive note, and whilst I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t seen it, it goes in exactly the right direction and will leave you wanting more. Of course, allll the HBO shows leave you craving for another hit. For example, I lent the first season of Deadwood to a couple at my brother’s workplace and they proceeded to watch that season and rented and watched the 2nd over the course of one weekend! And when I first started watching Entourage, I suggested it to all of my mates and they couldn’t get enough. Word spread, people got addicted and I guess it’s paying off. Season 4 of Entourage will now be extended to 20-21 episodes to be screened straight after the finale of The Sopranos next year. Great news for fans and newbie’s alike. And if you’d like to play catch up, the first two seasons are coming to DVD this Wednesday! Victory!!!!!!!!
