New York Dolls

Been reeeeeeeeeally busy lately with work and teaching so apologies for the lack of updates. Managed to shoot a couple of higher profile gigs of late. Shot The Mars Volta a couple of weeks back and you can check out the shots here. Suffice to say, it was one of the best gigs of the year. Cedric singing through the fan, smashing a light on the stage and throwing around rubbish bins. A photographers dream! Not to mention, just fantastic music.

Tonight I checked out 70’s punk band New York Dolls. With only two of the surviving members of the original line-up, they still put on a fairly rockin’ show. Lead singer David Johansen was in fine form doing his Mick Jagger thing. The sound mix wasn’t the greatest at the Hifi bar and it was bloody loud, especially when there were one too many feedbacks killing everyone’s hearing. But c’mon, how often do you get to see a 70’s New York punk band in Melbourne?
Sweep The Leg
Nice parody music video of the original Karate Kid.
The Answer

Yes the answer to 70’s inspired rock is Irish band The Answer. Playing at the always reliable venue for solid rock acts Fitzroy’s The Evelyn, the band blew the fanatical crowd away. The support acts leaved much to be desired but once The Answer arrived on stage, they owned it and had the crowd in the palm of their sweaty rock hands. I was there to take some photos but I was already planning on seeing them anyway and there was no way I was leaving after 3 songs. The lead singer definitely had a Robert Plant thing going on which is always fun to witness. Plenty of rock poses. At one point I was thinking this is what it must have been like to see a really rockin’ band back in the 70s. They’re currently supporting Eagles of Death Metal around the country and I highly recommend you check them out if you’re into that sort of sound.
And this week just gets better as I shall be shooting The Mars Volta tonight! My hearing is still quite fucked after The Answer gig though so I’m off to buy some decent earplugs! (not those shit foam one’s that muffle all the acoustics)
