New York Dolls

Been reeeeeeeeeally busy lately with work and teaching so apologies for the lack of updates. Managed to shoot a couple of higher profile gigs of late. Shot The Mars Volta a couple of weeks back and you can check out the shots here. Suffice to say, it was one of the best gigs of the year. Cedric singing through the fan, smashing a light on the stage and throwing around rubbish bins. A photographers dream! Not to mention, just fantastic music.

Tonight I checked out 70’s punk band New York Dolls. With only two of the surviving members of the original line-up, they still put on a fairly rockin’ show. Lead singer David Johansen was in fine form doing his Mick Jagger thing. The sound mix wasn’t the greatest at the Hifi bar and it was bloody loud, especially when there were one too many feedbacks killing everyone’s hearing. But c’mon, how often do you get to see a 70’s New York punk band in Melbourne?

Hey there, great photos!!! Now listen here, the Dolls were PRE-punk and influenced many bands to come, they were way ahead of their time and paid the price. Please note Jagger was influenced by David Johannssen not vice-versa. Also worth noting is how much guitarist ~Steve Conte resembles Johnny Thunders, plays a lot better though… I thought the sound not loud enough so there we go, i find the dolls like a vaudeville thing they are laughing all the time and Sylvain and David keep each other wound up, i laughed a lot, was baffled by the quiet non-particpatory audience for most of the show, saw that the guys kept up the good work and won many over. The thing is you have to buy the new CD and then listen to the old stuff, if you buy the LIve in London Meltdown Festival CD you will really get it and fall about laughing. These guys are troopers, i hope they come back
greetings to you

Hey Anna! Thanks for sharing the info!
Personally, I’m not a huge fan of the NYDs and you obviously know more than I do about the band. According to Wikipedia, it says that David Johannsen was influenced by Jagger so you might want to inform Wikipedia of their inaccuracies.
But great info and thanks heaps for sharing. You’ve opened my musical mind!
thanks james for your comments after my slightly disgruntled tones, yeah i am a big fan but don’t wanna be a smart ass, will check wikiped!
I want to recommend one thing: watch the DVD “from rockstar to rockbottom” about deceased Dolls bass player Arthur Kane. It will make U smile and wonder about the Dolls as they were/are a very strange and happy tale!
Again i love your pics , much better than i the paaers
good on you for goin for it
greetings
