Ahhh the fuzz. It’s hard to dislike anything Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright have achieved. Ever since I discovered and fell in love with the TV series Spaced, I’ve followed these guys careers and enjoyed their work. Their blend of comedy and action is always thrown at you in delicious servings and since being such huge fans of genre films and pop culture, I always get a kick out of the thousands of film geek references. And with Hot Fuzz, it’s really no different. Lots of laughs to be had, British cameos galore (can you spot Peter Jackson though?), Simon Pegg playing the straight man, Frost his little monkey sidekick and director Edgar Wright keeping things moving briskly with his surefire directing and editing. And let’s not forget their love of gore which in this case is even more brutal and graphic (but tongue in cheek) than in Shaun of the Dead. Which brings me to my next point – is this as good as Shaun of the Dead? I would say it’s pretty much on par. The same amount of laughs, a bunch of likable characters and the action sequences deliver the goods. The first half of the film delivers most of the laughs while the second half revs up the action quota to eleven and showcases the filmmakers love of such genre films as Point Break and Bad Boys II. This is good solid entertaining fun and fans of the trio should find nothing but love for Hot Fuzz.

Considered to be THE pioneers of acid jazz, Incognito played at Billboards last night to kick off their new world tour. Of course, this wasn’t the original line-up as they first burst onto the scene in 1981 with their debut record Jazz Funk. But an 8 piece band are always good fun to shoot and I had plenty of opportunities. Founding member Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick told the crowd a number of stories throughout his illustrious career and the crowd loved it. Acid jazz isn’t really my thing but there was no denying the band gave the audience their monies worth. More photos here.

Supporting were Melbourne jazz/funk/soul outfit Pablo Discobar. These boys were quite good and often play at the Night Cat here in Fitzroy, Melbourne so check them out if you’re in the mood for some funky tunes.

Virb

Virb!
So a new social networking site has surfaced and already I’m liking it much more than Myspace (which isn’t hard). It’s designer friendly (the backend is all beautiful standards driven CSS), easy to customise, less annoying ads, and just feels more comfortable to browse through. It was developed by the team behind purevolume.com and I know those guys have an immense love for great code and user interfaces so that’s why it looks and functions so beautifully. Currently, there isn’t a great deal of content on there but it’s growing fast and I really hope it can take a large chunk out of the Myspace pie. So head over to Virb, signup (it’s seriously painless) and add me to your friends list.
