KL: Day 03

Petronas Twin Towers 06
Petronas Twin Towers 03
Day 3 and it was time to explore the various shopping centres and China Town! Catching the monorail over to China Town was dead easy. When you get to the hawker stalls in the hub of Chinatown, it’s pretty full on walking through. Hawkers are in your face for what seems like an eternity selling cheap clothes, DVDs, wallets, watches, etc… The skill is in the bargaining and you never choose the first price, even if an item is marked down. It also gets bloody hot in the swarm so bringing bottled water is always a good call. I might go back there again and take some more photos as my camera battery died before I got into the hub.

Later on, with the battery quickly charged, I visited the Petronas Twin Towers which were fantastic to photograph. I managed to get my shots before a rather loud and spectacular freak thunderstorm came by and trenched everyone. Sitting under the towers in a bar with a beer in hand, I watched the storm and soaked up the atmosphere.

KL: Day 02

Sunway Hotel
Sunway Hotel entrance
Day 2 was checking out the University campus and meeting the faculty staff before heading out during the evening for some surprise, surprise - food and beer. The staff are all so nice and friendly at the University and the students were all keen to hear what I had to say (surely a first :) ). Above are pics of Sunway Hotel - quite the amazing hotel. Guarding the entrance are two huge elephant statues and behind that is the symbolic tiger chasing down deer. Attached to the back of the hotel is essentially a theme park. It’s pretty surreal to say the least.

New cuisine was eaten at a Sunway outdoor food hall one of which was LaLa (aka Oysters & Eggs). Now this wouldn’t be for everyone but I’m telling you, it is quite possibly the nicest dish I have ever come across. However… you do need an iron stomach to handle it. But if you’re brave and into new things, I highly recommend it. Also extremely tasty are the fried mushrooms.

KL: Day 01

City streets
Malaysian Spidey
The 8 hour flight was rather pleasurable apart from a group of VERY loud drunk older women behind me. I swear everyone on the flight wanted to slap them. In-flight on demand movies, TV and games kept me occupied when the laptop battery died in its arse. Once I arrived in KL, I met up with a friend and we headed off to the food stalls to get some cheap, amazing food.
Squid, calamari and beef
We tried chicken, beer, lamb, squid, calamari and stingray. Can’t say the stingray was all that nice. A little tough but that might be because of the food stall, not the cuisine itself.

Off to teach later today and then back out tonight for more eating and site seeing. Photos will also go up on my flickr page for those interested.
