A Nightmare on Elm St Trailer #2

This trailer gives a much better look at the ‘reimagining’ of the Nightmare saga. I think the Jackie Earle Haley scenes are good. The voice I’m still not convinced with yet but the laugh towards the end is good. And the makeup? Well it’s probably more detailed than the original but scary though? Hrmmmm. I guess no-one is ever going to replace Robert England but Jackie is probably the best person to fill the sweater. There’s a few homages to the original film – the hand in the bathtub, the bedroom ceiling scene and Freddy coming out of the wall (although it looked like dodgey CG to me). HD version here.

My biggest issue judging from this trailer is the younger cast. Wes Craven cast some memorable teens back in the original whereas this cast look instantly forgettable. The folks behind this ‘reimagining’ Platinum Dunes gave us the remakes of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th and I doubt anyone can remember any of the younger cast from those films except maybe Jessica Biel. Truth be told, if we want more memorable mainstream horror characters, I’m hanging for Scream 4. At least with Wes pretty much back in the director’s chair and Kevin Williamson writing, I can at least expect some decent character development for a teen horror flick.

Australians get to see A Nightmare on Elm St May 20th. US reviews will be out around April 30.

Breaking Bad: Season 3 promos

With the final season of Lost already underway (and kicking ass!), next up on the must-watch list of 2010 is season three of Breaking Bad. The series returns in March and here are some teaser trailers (and ‘tease’ the do). For Australians, the first series is currently screening on ABC 2 and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND checking it out if you haven’t already. You can also get the first two seasons on DVD.

Google Chrome: The Best Browser

Google Chrome
As a designer, one of the things we use everyday is the web browser. For a long time, Firefox was my browser of choice due to the countless add-ons I would use to assist in making my job easier. A few spring to mind – Firebug, Web Developer Toolbar, IE Tab, Adblock Plus, and Greasemonkey. However lately, Firefox has been rather slow when it comes to Javascript sites or just generally starting up. In an age when everyone wants data faster, our beloved Firefox just isn’t cutting it.

About two months ago, I decided to change to the developers version of Google Chrome (version 4 beta). The MAIN reason for switching apart from the speed is the ability to download Chrome Extensions. Adblock Plus there? Check. Firebug? Well there’s Firebug Lite (which isn’t as stable as the Firefox version but when combined with Chrome’s development tools, I’m good to go). IE Tab? Yep. Now you can’t use the extensions in the stable release of Chrome (v3) but I’ve had smooth sailing for the past two months with the Chrome beta and a number of extensions. Sure not all the extensions are as mature as their Firefox counterparts, but so far, so good. I’m also using a PC but from all reports, Chrome is hell fast on the Mac. And for us web designers who utilise Javascript and love it, how much faster is it really? Let’s see. In fact, even if you don’t design and develop for the web but want to run that news or content-heavy site that much faster, then you’d be stupid to not even give Chrome a try.

Aesthetically, the browser doesn’t look that great at first but you can easily customise it if need be. In the end, as much as I still love Firefox, it’s all about speed, memory usage and overall feeling like I am getting somewhere with smooth sailing that impresses me. How about you?
