The National - Boxer

So Stereogum today announced they looooooove the new album by The National, giving a premature evaluation since it’s not out for a while (May 22). From what I’ve heard so far, I 100% agree - definitely one of my favourite albums of the year. Although ‘Alligator’ is a hard debut to surpass, I can say without question ‘Boxer’ is a slightly more ambitious record yet still maintaining their trademark intimate sound. The new album should also garner the band a legion of new fans since the melodies are stronger and nearly instantly likeable. But the more you hear the album, the more you fall in love with it. And I love albums like that. The opening track ‘Fake Empire’ is brilliant but the entire album blends together so well that it’s hard to favour one track over another. But… if I had to, some of mine include the aforementioned ‘Fake Empire’, ‘Slow Show’, ‘Mistaken For Strangers’ and ‘Ada’.
Sand Pebbles EP Launch

Psychedelic rockers The Sand Pebbles launched their EP Atlantis Regrets Nothing last night at The Spanish Club. With the inclusion of Sun Blindness member Tor Larsen to the band, The Sand Pebbles sounded noticably different when I last saw them over a year ago. I also noticed a few familiar myspacers in the crowd as well as Dave Grainy (should’ve taken a pic but was too busy shooting the gig).

Starky, Pony Up

Checked out Sydney rockers Starky on Friday night. These guys have had a huge amount of publicity in various media and be sure to check out Sydney photographer Paul Gosney’s work for their album. Brilliant indeed.
Supporting were Pony Up, the all-girl Canadian band who you’ve probably heard on the radio with their single ‘The Truth About Cats and Dogs (And then they die)’. Not the greatest performers but they had their own thing going on which was cool enough for me. And their video is pretty awesome.
