Guest Lecturing

It’s been nearly a year since I graduated University and in that time I’ve learnt a little about ‘the industry’ and business in general. I have to admit, being a ‘multimedia developer’ is much more difficult than I first envisioned because to be able to do web, print, photography, video, dvd and IT-related work (mostly networking, security and support jobs) and switch from one to the other at a moments notice can be tough. And everyone expects you to be an expert in all those areas which just isn’t possible. Just to keep up with all of the current trends in those areas can be extremely time-consuming. So when I was asked to guest lecture at my University and give the first year design and multimedia students some advice, I was honoured and happy to help out. At first I didn’t think I was experienced enough but despite some initial reservations, I think I managed to grab a few of the students attention. That or I was flying low and they couldn’t help but stare. But seriously, it felt good helping out and attempting to inspire the students (btw, picture above is from my graduation and is added for dramatic effect).
And in doing some research for the lecture, it made me think about my own portfolio, set of skills and what it takes to land a (good) job in the industry. Bloody… hard… work!
Graduation Day

It’s all officially over. University life is no more. Sure I finished my last exam in November of last year but after attending the graduation ceremony this morning, it’s a reminding realisation that it’s the end of 4 years hard work. Strange that the ceremony was so early in the day and also a shame because the post-ceremony drinks were restricted to water, tea and juice when what most of us really wanted was a beer or several. One thing I thought they should have done was give the Bachelor recipients (that’s us on the left) one colour band per degree. I, along with a few others there, had two degrees under our belts so shouldn’t we receive two bands? I know that sounds extremely wanky but on the flip side, we did essentially study for a separate degree so shouldn’t it show? If the phD students get orange robes, the least we could have got was an extra band.
Final Exam

No not the cheesy 1980’s horror movie but more so the story of my life. Yes I’ve finished what could possibly be the last exam of my entire life and I’m feeling so friggin relieved. The moment I stepped out of that examination hall, I felt like screaming out “fuck yeah” a million times but only managed a couple of shouts. If the Swedes can open their windows and yell out to the top of their lungs each month, then I can too. Unfortunately I still have a couple of subjects to complete before I graduate (including filming a documentary) but those evil, rather pointless periods of mental torture are far behind.
