So I wanted to turn my iPod Touch into a phone and it’s very possible (via VoiP). A few people have done it successfully so I thought I’d share the process here:

Download the fring application from the Apple App Store on your Ipod Touch (2nd Gen only) or iPhone. This (free) app enables you to call Skype users, Google Talk users, MSN users and a few other IMs with voice.

You’ll need a pair of microphone head or earphones for this to work correctly. I’m using the standard iPhone headphones here (note the four conductors on its headphone jack) which have an inbuilt microphone. The iPod Touch headphones only have two conductors so there’s no in-built microphone :(

You can buy microphone earphones from Apple directly (the standard iPhone earphone which will work OR these pricer ones. ) or I’ve heard a cheap Philips microphone connector works in conjunction with a standard mic in much the same way.

Next, login to fring, signup with an account (it’s free) and then sign into your Skype, Google Talk, MSN, etc… account to make calls through those services. Obviously you can use Skype to Skype Out to regular phones so it’s very cool.

So as long as you have Wifi access, you can use your iPod Touch 2G as a phone without Jailbreaking it :D
