The National - Boxer

So Stereogum today announced they looooooove the new album by The National, giving a premature evaluation since it’s not out for a while (May 22). From what I’ve heard so far, I 100% agree - definitely one of my favourite albums of the year. Although ‘Alligator’ is a hard debut to surpass, I can say without question ‘Boxer’ is a slightly more ambitious record yet still maintaining their trademark intimate sound. The new album should also garner the band a legion of new fans since the melodies are stronger and nearly instantly likeable. But the more you hear the album, the more you fall in love with it. And I love albums like that. The opening track ‘Fake Empire’ is brilliant but the entire album blends together so well that it’s hard to favour one track over another. But… if I had to, some of mine include the aforementioned ‘Fake Empire’, ‘Slow Show’, ‘Mistaken For Strangers’ and ‘Ada’.
