Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony

Tuned into the 18th Commonwealth Games coverage on 9 (why Ray Martin yet again?) last night, hosted here in Melbourne. I was planning to go down to the Yarra to watch it all myself but work kept me back late.
First impressions? Not tooooo bad. Watching that iconic old skool Melbourne tram float down with a pair of fairly crap cockatoo wings surfaced my initial reservations about the whole proceedings. Quite frankly, it looked VERY average and when it landed on what looked like a Melways map (Melbourne’s own unique mapping book), I cringed. Luckily to diversify a little, out of the tram spilled various dancers and singers dressed as ordinary Melburnians which was a nice touch. Seeing the entire MCG lit up and then later on the whole of the CBD was pretty amazing to witness and some of the music choices were well-handled. Hearing The Church perform their hit ‘Under the Milky Way’ made me feel proud to be an Aussie but I reckon The Cat Empire would have been a little tired after playing no-stop while the athletes rolled out.
