Grindhouse IS split in Australia!

Grindhouse Split in Australia
Fuckety, fuckety, fuck! And not only that, but it won’t be released on May 10th! According to Empire Online Australia, the grindhouse film experience will be no more and ‘Planet Terror’ and ‘Death Proof’ are likely to get a release “…some other day some time after (May 10th)”.

Judging from the abysmal 2nd weekend takings, I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t get a straight to DVD release at this rate. But I doubt Harvey Weinstein will release any DVDs until he’s split the films in the US (surely that’s gonna happen now) and let them have their run. The potential unfortunate thing about that is those thinking “Fuck Aussie distributors! I’ll just buy the US DVD!” will have to wait quite a while. But who knows? Right now - the fate of Grindhouse is anyone’s guess. But just know it will be split here in Australia and the first film to get released (most likely ‘Planet Terror’ - Rodriguez’s film) is currently sitting on the tba release date shelf.

Grindhouse Split?

Grindhouse Split?
Was it because people didn’t get the whole Grindhouse concept, or the fact that it was released over the family oriented Easter period or perhaps it was the 3 hour plus running time but Grindhouse essentially tanked at the US box office over the weekend. US$11.5 million opening weekend, when the budget was set at around US$67 million and the marketing was around US$30 million. So not a great return on investment.

UPDATE #2!

Well fuck right off because unfortunately the final word is YES IT WILL BE SPLIT! Empire Online Australia have confirmed it!

UPDATE!

I have just received information from a fairly reliable source that Grindhouse WON’T be split here in Australia, at least on its initial cinematic run. Woohoo! And it’s out May 10th instead of the 31st.

Now according to Harvey Weinstein, they’re planning to split the Rodriguez/Tarantino double-feature into two separate features - most likely released months apart ala Kill Bill. And what gets worse is this possibility could make it’s way to our shores. Europe will already get separate releases and the UK and Australia have been mentioned.

But c’mon Harvey, it kinda defeats the whole purpose of the Grindhouse experience. It’s SUPPOSED to be a double-bill experience and by splitting them up, the (film-makers) concept is lost. I really hope people in the US wake up and catch onto the Grindhouse experience next week and the numbers pick up. Word of mouth works wonders but as Aint-it-cool-news has pointed out, they didn’t market the film online at all! And they’re probably their biggest audience - the internerd film geeks like myself.

Grindhouse is tentatively due for Australian release on May 31st May 10th. Time will tell what exactly we get on that date.

Happy Thanksgiving!

NSFW (Not Safe For Work) btw. Could be the best thing Eli Roth has ever done!
